Ehsan Hemat: Everything brings us back to the body

Ein Duett zwischen Mensch und Kupferplatte. Außerirdisch mutet das große, polierte Objekt an – stammt aber aus tiefster Erde, aus Tagebauminen in Afrika und den Amerikas. In sich trägt es Geschichten menschlicher wie ökologischer Ausbeutung, denen Ehsan Hemat sich mittels Bewegung, Klang und Stimme nähert. Dabei schafft er eindrucksvolle Bilder: lässt das Kupfer aufflammen im Dunkeln, duckt den eigenen Körper hinter der Platte weg, erstrahlt dann wieder im Licht ihrer Reflexion. Der Titel, der als Motto für das Festival als Ganzes stehen könnte, zitiert den postkolonialen Theoretiker Achille Mbembe: Everything brings us back to the body.

A duet between a human and a copper plate. There’s something extraterrestrial about the large and polished object – but in fact, it comes from the depths of the earth, from open-pit mines in Africa and the Americas. It carries histories of human and ecological exploitation, activated by Ehsan Hemat with movement, sound and voice. In this, he creates spectacular images, makes the copper blaze up in the darkness, covers his own body with the plate, then again lets himself gleam in the light of its reflection. The title, which could serve as a motto for the entire festival, quotes postcolonial theorist Achille Mbembe: Everything brings us back to the body.
