WUK Arts and Culture
WUK is an open cultural space — a place where art, politics and social engagement come together in practice. At its heart is the production and presentation of innovative, experimental, interdisciplinary and critical art and culture, with a focus on local, regional and international exchange.
The four programme areas of WUK Kunst und Kultur—WUK Musik, WUK performing arts, WUK KinderKultur and kex—kunsthalle exnergasse — present a diverse programme of concerts, performance, theatre, dance, visual art, children’s culture, photography, film and media art, literature and club nights, alongside socio-political and interdisciplinary events.
Alongside around 150 groups and individuals working across seven areas — visual arts, music, dance/theatre/performance, children and young people, workshops, social initiatives, and intercultural initiatives—the self-organised WUK Socio-Cultural Centre is home to three independent art institutions. Throughout the year, they curate and present exhibitions, installations and other artistic projects.
Fotogalerie Wien focuses on contemporary photography and develops interdisciplinary projects, while IntAkt Gallery presents the work of women artists living and working in Vienna. Kunstzelle, the WUK courtyard’s smallest exhibition space, regularly explores site-specific, interactive and multimedia installations.
WUK also has a presence on the outskirts of Vienna at Zukunftshof, where kex—kunsthalle exnergasse runs an artist residency programme at the intersection of art, urbanism and ecology. Through artistic research, interventions and collaborations, the programme engages with questions including urban agriculture and the expansion of the city.
