Inscribing the Temporal is a survey of recent and current artistic and curatorial practices taking place outside established institutional frameworks in New York City and Vienna. The exhibition focuses on individual and collective efforts by artists and curators that culminate in public contexts as events, installations, happenings, screenings, performances, and social situations, many of which are site-specific and fleeting in nature. While most of these projects and artworks have not been produced for presentation in a gallery setting, the exhibition re-presents and, in some cases, reactivates these works at the Kunsthalle Exnergasse, questioning whether ephemeral art can be inscribed.

The exhibition consists of three components: an installation of situationist and process-based artworks from New York, representing activities that take place in non-art world context with public components; an archive documenting independent, noncommercial projects and off-spaces in Vienna as well as background on the New York scene; and a symposium on January 22nd.

The installed artworks from New York were selected from a number of ongoing projects take place in the typical art world setting of galleries, museums, and alternative spaces: 16Beaver Group, the Brewster Project, Cabinet Magazine, the Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP); the Tugboat Film and Video Series.
