Open Studio: The Magic
“ The past carries a secret index with it, by which it is referred to its resurrection. Are we not touched by the same breath of air which was among that which came before?...” (Walter Benjamin, On the concept of history)
Open Studio: The Magicintroduces Hyung-Min Yoon’s realized and unrealized projects during the 10-week residence at Kunsthalle Exnergasse.
Yoon’s primary research was focused on hand gestures in sacred pictures inspired by Dürer’s “Praying Hands” in the Albertina Museum. The Magic, a series of 14 silkscreen prints on antique paper was produced during the residence as a result. Unrealized proposals deal with the artist’s ongoing interest in language as well as unique experience of time in the city characterized as Viennese coffee culture.
