With its award winning background, Open Systems has functioned as an online platform since 2013, whose primary focus is to bring different critical perspectives on art and visual culture to the surface in order to reach a broader audience after five successful years of highly acclaimed international exhibitions and events.

One of the aims of Open Systems is to publish a quarterly journal on various subjects as well as an interdisciplinary online exhibition within the context of ARTSLAB on the basis of an essential geopolitical stand, in which a political position and a certain creative/artistic agenda offer new potentials. In this respect, the initial encounter of the first year exhibition Open Systems 1-01-04/13 included:

° ARTSLAB, The Territorial Complex
Project curator: Walter Seidl

° ARTSLAB, with/in/significant other
Project curator: Işın Önol

° ARTSLAB, De/Re/Construction: Time, Space, Memories
Project curators: Aneta Stojnić and Nikola Dedić

° ARTSLAB, A Word on a Tree Like a Body as a Thing
Project curator: Federica Bueti

with their artistic selection of curatorial positions together with a Special Events and Screening programme at GPL Contemporary from 15 January – 13 February 2014 in Vienna.

The set-up of the second edition of the annual exhibition Open Systems 2-01-04/14 aims to present the works at the verge of all those flows and spaces of encounters on the paradigm of the potentiality of the space and the structure within an inter-disciplinary creative realm at WUK Projektraum.

Opening: 3 February, 19:00 - 21.30
Opening hours: 4 - 12 Februar 2015. Mo – Fr. 12:00 – 18:00 pm

Venue: WUK Projektraum
Währinger Straße 59
1090 Vienna

Opening hours: Mo – Fr. 12:00 – 18:00

Performance: 3 February, 20:00 - 20.30

How to look at what's in front of you and run the other way, or,
how to look at what's right in front of you and stay there

by Sarah Mendelsohn

° ARTSLAB, Illusion and Exodus

Project curator: Marius Ertelt

The artworks presented explore practices of imitation, translation and repetition and examine the extent to which a desire for authenticity, originality or essence is expressed through re-enacting models. Via a media detour and in the regressive recourse to simple, partly analogue formats of artistic pseudo-activity such as fictive settings, fakes and copies, the works create distances which nevertheless neither seek to establish anything like an authority nor a neutral viewpoint of analysis. Neither is their aim to expose staging as such. Rather, they result in anachronistic qualities and partially in provocations of the unforeseeable.

Artist: Ovidiu Anton

° ARTSLAB, What if... and beyond

Project curator: Vasja Nagy

What if... and beyond focuses on the trajectory of how we perceive our present now and distinguish it from the past – chaotic vs. ordered, concerning the stimulation of a dialogue at its reinvention for alternative thinking on the future of a long-term survival of humanity by taking contemporary art works more as a catalyst for the present.

Artists: Vesna Bukovec, Bernhard Cella, Giulia Cilla , Yolanda Domínguez , Gani Llalloshi, Swoon Sašo Sedlaček

° ARTSLAB, Memorial and Revision

Project curator: Sarah Mendelsohn

“…Anyway, what is it, to ‘understand’? Under, stand? Does it advocate the need to stand under, to haunt, to capture, to stoically stand on, or in a worst-case scenario: to stand underneath it, to dig in, to take shelter in your knowledge. And then you can hide in the arms of the academy. Mama.”
—Ruslana Lichtzier, from 6 x 9 (2013)

Artists: Iman Issa, Jelena Jureša, Ruslana Lichtzier, Eduard Freudmann
° ARTSLAB, Gocce nella città di sole degli Spettri

Project curator: Christian Egger

Gocce di sole nella città degli spettri focuses on history and aesthetics related to the sphere of institutional critique. The project brings together a variety of international art works that engage in performance, video, sculpture and graphic works in black and white. Choosing these media is less important than the passionate interest in a particular field of force: politics, art and theory, which the project is outright referencing to. Soon, a paradox of a general view appears: the particular one of “self-staging” among a clear commitment to a dark but glamorous pop-poetry, echoing critique.

Artists: Cut and Scrape, Schorsch Kamerun

The main focal point of this engagement within the year exhibition Open Systems 2-01-04/14 centres on the different creative practices concerned with building an inter-disciplinary network.
