Curated by Alex Lawler and Frank Altmann

This exhibition maps the ways that 11 young European artists build physical, semiotic and cultural languages that lead in and out of contemporary notions of abstraction. Articulated within each of these spheres of abstraction is a relational world that is fundamentally literal and emphasizes a departure not from historical notions of figuration, but from historical non-objectivity.

This applied notion of abstract vision echoes Henri Bergson’s insistence of intuition over analysis and represents a position arising after an artist places themselves within the field of abstraction or inside the literalness of an object and turns back to face the world.

This exhibition posits that modes of perception and the mechanics of metaphysical vision serve as structural supports for abstraction in the same way as built structures support contemporary art culture. In this way, this group of artists reveal themselves through gestures that are both physically present and fundamentally conceptual.

APPROPRIATION

Part I: Questioning the Image

EventTeaser:APPROPRIATION

Because of the current noticeable affinity towards the use and recontextualization of found material in the work of many artists active in international art discourse the curatorial team of the FOTOGALERIE WIEN, together with art historian and curator Petra Noll, has developed APPROPRIATION as the special focus for this year. The conceptual basis is provided by the Appropriation Art of the 1970s and 1980s in which artists conceptually appropriated pre-existing art works.

Position

Valentin Ruhry

EventTeaser:Position

In Valentin Ruhry's works, it is the simple elements that seem to become more than what they are – not technical features, rather electricity in its pure form, how it accomplishes the distance to the light bulb and the neon tube, is aestheticised by the artist. The sculptural process concentrates on the modelling of light, light media, and their components. They form the heart around which the artist weaves his story and the necessary supplements.
