The Fotogalerie Wien is a non-profit organisation and is constituted as the Association for the Promotion of Photography and New Media. The association functions as an information gallery, operating independent from trends set by the commercial mainstream. Founded in 1981 by Josef Wais, a team of seven artistic photographers began an exhibition programme in 1982 at the present day location in WUK. Our mission was and is to this day the presentation of contemporary art photography, interdisciplinary projects and new media, which directly address current themes, pressing issues and discourses. The curatorial activity is an essential characteristic of the gallery. The current team of 8 artists works together to arrange thematic exhibitions compiled from the numerous submissions and collected ideas. An underlying idea is to not only show the work of important world-renowned artists but, above all, to promote and present work from younger, emergent scenes in Austria and abroad. Likewise, artistic exchange projects with foreign galleries and institutions are a fixed component of our exhibition programme. We thereby facilitate information exchange, discussions and presentations from the respective partners and countries, as well as the presentation of Austrian artists abroad.
Since 1985 the magazine BILDER has accompanied every exhibition and has been sent to numerous interested parties, both locally and internationally. Additionally, we publish two annual catalogues, one a retrospective of a photographer and one on the annual theme.
