The Democratic Work College
Schools in WUK
The Democratic Work College offers students:
Orientation: professional and academic
Preparation: for entrance into schools of further education and occupations – above all in artistic and technical fields – and for matriculation, external and qualification to study examinations.
Lessons
The lessons are interwoven with those of the WUK Democratic School and take place in its classrooms. Together with the supervisors, the students of the Work College compose their timetable at the beginning of the school year; regular coaching hours are a component of the timetable. During the regular class times the students receive lessons in German, English and Spanish, which correspond with those of the secondary school curriculum.
The students can attend additional foreign language courses (Italian or French) together with the youth from the Democratic School. Spanish is offered to the college students as a compulsory second foreign language. All other subjects are arranged in blocks together with the Democratic School or take place on a regular basis (as part of the timetable).
For the college students there are separate block projects when needed.
How does the school year look?
Regular lessons together with the Democratic School interchange with block months when internships, travel, projects etc. take place.
Each student composes their own annual programme, which is regularly reviewed together with the supervisors to see if this plan is being fulfilled.
Is there an official certificate?
Up to the 9th grade there is a certified report card. From the 10th grade on the students receive a confirmation certificate of school attendance; for internships, special projects or performances, and graduation there are additional certificates. A comprehensive portfolio is compiled for each student, which thoroughly documents all performances and developments in technical, artistic, social, personal and intellectual areas.
Matriculation Examination?
Whoever would like to matriculate receives special preparation for the external examinations.
Qualification to study exams?
One can become qualified for post-secondary studies by other means than matriculation: there are also qualification to study examinations, which are however only valid for the chosen field of study. We also provide targeted preparation for such exams. Details information on the topic can be found here: http://studieren.univie.ac.at/index.php?id=688
Normally, one must be at least 22-years-old to take these exams, however when one acquires study qualification for the compulsory courses in a chosen field of study via external exams, the admission age is reduced by 2 years.
